James M. Masnov is an historian whose work focuses on American intellectual history, legal history, Constitutional history, Colonial America, the American Revolution, and the early American republic. His work has been published in academic journals such as Pure Insights as well as platforms for a general readership, including the Oregon Encyclopedia and New Discourses.
A recent and powerful movement to manipulate and erase history has emerged and James's writings often address this issue and act as a counter to what he has called "Historical Phillistinism." A lack of appreciation for complex and nuanced history has enabled bad actors to take advantage of a historically illiterate populace.
The articles and essays featured on this website are meant to shed light upon this matter, inform readers about interesting aspects of history, challenge popular and inaccurate assumptions, and ultimately turn the tide in order to provide for a vision of history that neither deifies nor vilifies, avoids reductionist narratives, and seeks to re-assert reason, evidence, and grounded analysis in the pursuit of historical knowledge.
Above all, the mission of this site is to underscore the value of history education, which can foster good citizens who once again can believe in the liberal project of self-government, equal application of law, and individual rights.
